Works in Progress

Keeping in mind the many different research projects going on within our department and the exciting ideas that are being discussed, this forum seeks to cultivate a welcoming space of intellectual exchange where graduate and faculty members in the Hispanic Studies Department can share and present their work.

By works-in-progress, we imagine research in any stage before publication: whether it be a completely novel approach that takes you to previously unknown territory, the frustrated traces of your most stubborn dissertation chapter or article, or a piece that you have been working on and would like to expand and improve with the help of feedback from your colleagues.

As many of you are working on new articles, preparing writing samples, advancing in your dissertation, and/or applying to jobs throughout this new academic year, we hope that you will be able to find time to join us for these friendly conversations.

This initiative seeks to:

1. Provide an informal and lively forum to present new or developing work on the cultural productions of Spain, Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Latino US;

2. Host productive lunch-hour meetings where different scholars present their ongoing research either by: a) pre-circulating a portion of their work (approx. 10–30 pages) that will be briefly introduced by a moderator (in 3–5 min.), and will be followed by group conversation about the topic; or b) by preparing a short presentation (15 min. or less), followed by group conversation about the topic;

3. Encourage constructive feedback to specific projects while also broadening discussions across the many approaches within our community.

If you are interested in sharing your work in the series, please contact the Hispanic Studies Graduate Student Group at gshispanicstudies@gmail.com, including in your email a preferred month for your workshop, along with title and a brief description of your project.
